Did the Oscars clinch the election for President Obama?

By Christopher Moloney, OutFront producer

Mitt Romney moved one step closer to the Republican presidential nomination with wins in the Arizona and Michigan primaries on Tuesday night.

But President Obama may have already won the election.

Why?

"The Artist" beat "The Descendants" for Best Picture at the Oscars.

A strange pattern has emerged over the past 50 years, and it seems an incumbent president's hopes for re-election are tied to which films win big at the two major Hollywood award shows.

Specifically, if a film is named Best Picture (Drama) at the Golden Globes and Best Picture at the Academy Awards, the Republican candidate is elected.
If not, the Democrat wins.

The theory applies to the year the films are awarded, not the year they are released–this year's awards went to films released last year–and if it holds, "The Descendants' " inability to repeat its Golden Globes triumph at this year's Oscars means Obama will win.

In 2004, George W. Bush, a Republican, was re-elected when "The Lord of The
Rings: The Return of the King" won both the Golden Globe and the Oscar.

In 1996, Bill Clinton, a Democrat, won a second term when "Sense & Sensibility" and "Braveheart" split the trophies.

"Bugsy" won the Golden Globe and "Silence of the Lambs" took the Oscar in 1992, and George H. W. Bush lost to Clinton.

Ronald Reagan won his second term in 1984, when "Terms of Endearment" won both statues, and four years before that, he beat Jimmy Carter during the "Kramer vs. Kramer" sweep.

In 1972, Richard Nixon was re-elected on the strength of "The French Connection," a film about a police officer who stumbles on a French connection, only to resign two years later when a security guard stumbles on a Cuban connection.

And less than a year after assuming office for John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson was re-elected when the Golden Globe and the Oscar went to two different films: one about a young Catholic priest from Boston confronting bigotry ("The Cardinal"), the other about a ladies' man ("Tom Jones").

There are exceptions to the rule, of course.

In 1976, when "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" won both awards, things went crazy, and Gerald Ford failed to win.

But as Ford was never actually elected as president or vice president in the first place, there is an argument to be made he was never a true incumbent.

The only other time the election went off-script was in 1956, the first year the Golden Globes were held with a president seeking a second term.

That year, "East of Eden" won the Golden Globe but not the Oscar, which went to "Marty," and Adlai Stevenson, a Democrat, lost to incumbent Dwight D.
Eisenhower.

The loss must have been particularly tough for John Steinbeck, the "East of Eden" author, who had actually sent a 19-page handwritten letter to the Democratic Digest, advising them on how to prevent Eisenhower from winning a second term.

In the letter, Steinbeck wrote: "It is generally considered that novelists are not good politicians. As candidates I should (think) this would be true but as designers of political method the reverse is probably true."

Or maybe he should have just asked a screenwriter.

What do you think of this theory? Do you believe in superstitions? Do you think "OutFront" staffers have too much free time?

How can you call this tripe news?

Will Canada be a "Super Power" in the tradionial definition, the answer is a resounding NO. As the article mentioned, the Canadian economy is only the 10th biggest in the World and Canada's military when compared to other countries does not even rank that high.

However, what Canada can become is an "Energy Super Power". With the oilsands set to almost triple production to more than 4 M barrels / day. Canada will is set to become one of the largest Non-OPEC exporters of oil in the World. In addition Canada produces approx 25 % of the Worlds uranium. For those that desire renewable energy, Canada is increasing its hydro electric production and exporting that electricity to the US.

For a world that desires both energy and food security, Canada is the place to be for the near future

That Obama speech and questions ?. My take was we're not jumping into any decisions about war and Iran in a month or two or three. He's not listening to politics making any decisions and seemed very relaxed and calm about it in his discussion and not getting hyper to pull the trigger and react. He's all about think it on through and thinking of the consequences.Lives end and our US Troops at risk. Obama needs to take a trip to Israel and feel it out. Also he says there is talk Iran is opening up to share for inspection and want to get along with the international community and Obama says they know how to do that. Umm ? So,does that mean Obama thinks Iran knows how to behave and they will ?

Keying into each one, and exploring their KEY views, I find that Paul by far and away explains himself better than any other contender.... His, Paul's site information is far more expressive than any of the others on every issue.. No lies, no promises, nothing to guess about....My comment here is no further off beat than this article!

Obama's going to win because he's been the best president since JFK. He kept us from a Republican-led Great Depression, got Osama Bin Laden, restored the good name of the US through much of the world, and cares about the middle class. All the things Republicans can't or won't do because they're far too worried about which religion you belong to.

You must miss the halcyon days when GW Bush was doing expensive flybys in AirForce One, his misguided attempts to make his dad happy by getting "Saddaam Hoosane", his never-ending vacation days–which he used AirForce One to get to Texas (more irresponsible tax money spent), his two wars that were waged without careful thought or a plan on how to pay for them, his inability to speak a coherent sentence, and the fact that thousands were killed under his watch and he kept sending troops back for multiple tours, the hatred that was aimed at the United States during all 8 years that he was in office. Additionally, the deregulation (let's not forget that the GW, the MBA president was unaware of the collapse of the economy until it was looking him and the rest of us in the face) the Bush Doctorine, Dick Cheney, Haliburton, and other acts of blatant stupidity that democrats had to put up with when GW was president.

It's our turn, republicans. Now you have to put up with our guy for the next 4 years, and believe me, you will not suffer nearly as much as we did under GW Bush. Now you run along home and try again in 2016

Argue all you want, name call all you want. The simple truth is this, productive people will stop paying for unproductive (democrats) to line their pockets with payouts.

You can name call all you want, but eventually you will run out of other peoples money. Either you will be forced to try and take it ( I hope so as you will lose, simply cause good americans wont allow it) or your base will abandon you as you dont give them enough money for doing nothing.

No matter what the deomcratic party is doomed to failure, as it is based upon the simple fact that they can continue to buy votes with other peoples money.

Eventually those people will say enough is enough, or the leeches will want too much.

Yes, and the poorest, and least educated states are all run by republicans–and it has been that way for decades.

What does it tell you that the poorest states (Arkansas and Mississippi and most of the other southern states) have voted republicans in to represent them, and yet they have continued to be poor and disenfranchised straight into the 21st century? This fact alone would make you want to never vote a republican in if he does not work for you so that you have a good quality of life.

It is clear that fanatism obscure thinking. If President Obama appoints one Justice to the Supreme Court can that transform it to a communist body? Don't you see that even China is going the Capitalism way? Have you considered that this Supreme Court stole one election from President Al Gore and put in the White House a man responsible for the unjustified death of thousands of American soldiers. By the way Sadam Hussein was our best team player in the confrontation with the real enemy of the USA, Iran. Stop listening to the thread of lies from Fox "News" and read the really informative sources like CNN, NY Times, Huffington Post, The Daily Beast, CBS, ABC, NBC, BBC, NPR, PBS...real journalism. Only the truth will make you free.

It was kind of an interesting read... A nice "fluff" story. It can't be about all hard news all the time (and I'm guessing that isn't your kind of writing assignment anyway). It's an interesting take on how the election will pan out. However don't read too much into it. The article is meant to entertain. Too much hard news all the time could worry a person to death. I'm not saying don't be aware of what's going on. Know what's happening in our world. But take time out from the craziness too... So it doesn't make you crazy.

I always wondered why so-called "Conservatives" think that so-called "Liberals" hate America, because of the "liberals" knack for holding truer to actual conservative ideals than the so-called "Conservatives."

Engaging in foreign wars: considered liberal; actually espoused mainly by Republicans

Using government to limit freedoms: considered liberal; actually espoused mainly by Republicans

Giving corporations greater rights than individuals: considered fascist; actually espoused by Republican

Being Pro-Military: Proven to be more of a Dem philosophy. Rep's want to use the military as much as possible to the benefit of certain corporations, Dems continually fight the Rep's who are constantly trying to reduce Vet's benefits.

How is the 'birther' line STILL an issue? Obama is an American citizen – irregardless of where he was born – thanks to his mother. According to the law:

If one parent is a U.S. citizen and the other parent is not, the child is a citizen if the U.S. citizen parent has been physically in the U.S. before the child's birth for a total period of at least five years, and at least two of those five years were after the U.S. citizen parent's fourteenth birthday.

Ann Dunham Sotoro was born in Witchita, Kansas in 1942. Her family lived in the mainland US until 1959 – 17 years. That, by itself, satisfies the citizenship requirement.

Has anyone heard of a President by the name of Franklin D. Roosevelt? Only president to have 3 terns... was president during most of the great depression. Stock market crashed... millions jobless... anyone remember learning about that in school? Roosevelt (considered one of the top presidents) taxed the rich greatly. He also raised the national debt. His social programs raised the decifit 40% in the first year alone! All this to get us out of a depresion. Conservatives called Roosevelt a Socialist (which to me isnt always a bad thing) and many could not stand the sight of him. Once again... all of this to get out of a depression. Well folks we are in the same situation. Obama I believe is following in FDR's shoes. Government has to spend money so that the American people can have money. Once we get out of this funk we can elect another Republican president who will not spend any money and lower the deficit for us. In the mean time we have to suck it up and do something. We cannot cut taxes because that will cause less money. And whose to say that if we cut the taxes of the rich that they will not just hoard all that money? Obama is doing the right thing. He may not always get it right but atleast he is doing something and HE IS MAKING PROGRESS. It took us almost 20 years to get out of the depression. Here it is only 4 years later and we are seeing result... its not going to be an over night miracle but we will get there... together. Bare with my if this seems scattered (it is 312 in the morning and I have not had a full nights sleep). I highly believe we must stick on the current course. Republicans... we gave your guy 2 terms and 2 wars (Bush may not have spent a lot of money but he did spend a lot of of human lives), you can give Obama another 4 years to finish what he started. Its not going to fix over night. It is getting better. It is changing. It is the right choice.

The big difference is that we didn't have social programs when FDR became president, we had almost no national debt, and our deficits were negligible. Today, we're choking on social programs, our national debt is bigger than our GDP, and our deficit is already many times greater than what FDR implemented. FDR had a better country to work with.

    • Dude

One major difference is that Obama was handed an economy deeply in debt. This makes it harder to do deficit spend. But, the principle is the still there.

Roosevelt did not "spend" he invested. He built roads, dams and other infrastructure that ultimately paid back big time. Hoover dam is still pumping out power after 70+ years.

Building solar-thermal power plants in large numbers, for example. And there is a design that uses stored heat to generate power 24X7. Fixing roads, bridges, highways, water storage and delivery, sewer systems, internet upgrades and so on can create the jobs now to get America back to work now and provide the economic engine to pay for themselves for decades into the future.

And if you consider huge tax cuts spending, Bush was one of the biggest spenders in history. Using the surplus to pay down the debt would have stimulated the economy as much or more than the tax cuts did.

If you remember what the economy looked like less than 4 years ago, the fact that markets are growing, unemployment is falling and GDP is rising is nearly miraculous. The recovery is, however, uneven. Some sectors have recovered nearly 100% and other sectors are still struggling.

Obama wants to leverage the strength of sectors that are more fully recovered to help the people still lagging. The Republicans want to make the people who still struggling pay to help the people who are doing well.

      4 more years!!

The money that government spent during Roosevelt's terms was spent on necessary things not things like building mosques in foreign countries and pork projects that help no one and massive government projects like Dept of Energy that are completely worthless. Also the money the government spent then was not borrowed from China. And Roosevelt did not introduce hundreds of anti-business regulations that regulate such things as the size of holes in swiss cheese or what kind of wood you can use in guitars.

Your beliefs do not resonate with many people. Mr Obama is incompetent and the economy is in a wretched state. He was fast tracked into the Presidency before being ready for the job. Travis,
In this country Socialism is always a bad thing. Socialism doesn't allow for individual freedom. The primary pillar on which our society is built. It took so long to come out of the great depression BECAUSE of the socialist policies of FDR. The Great Depression was worldwide, how come all other nations exited the great depression years before we did? The answer FDR and the predecessor to Keynsian economics.

I appreciate all the comments (good and bad). All I did was state my opinion and you all were kind enough to state your own opinions in a mature and kind manner. I respect everything you all say and will continue to have my views. We forget sometimes that we are lucky to be Americans. We can have opinions... we can have freedom. We are not held down and we can change any situation we come across. America is not going to perish. We will get through all this and we will be STRONGER than we were before. One thing I have to say though is that the divisions have to end. We need mutual respect on both sides. We need to respect Obama as well as the GOP candidates. There is no right answer to all of this. There are many different ways to achieve the goals we seek. In the mean time we must all be mature and respectful. The mud slinging on BOTH sides of the spectrum are soiling the good American name.

Americans should recognize what a great leader they have in Barack Obama. Get behind him and your great country will once again be strong economically and America will be respected throughout the world as he steers your country from one perpetually looking for an excuse to intervene militarily abroad to one more prepared to use diplomacy to solve problems. our wolrd is made up of people & leaders of different ideologies and a willingness to talk to them does not mean that Obama is weak but on the contrary he is a statesman, a rae quality in this dangerous time.

What has Obama's statesmanship accomplished? Iran is right on track to develop a nuke. Syria is freely killing its citizens. Obama intervened in Lybia, but it hasn't stabilized (nor is he doing anything to help it stabilize). We've pulled out of Iraq, but the Iraqis are now killing American freely.

People like Obama. People like a really nice rug. They're using him the same way they would use a nice rug. You don't really want to step on it too much, but, HEY!!!, it's just a rug.

Couple all of that with his failure of leadership on the economy and you don't have a great leader. Not by a longshot. He is full of talk, but no action. His saving grace in the upcoming elections is that he is guaranteed to run against a poor candidate. Romney is just more of the same, Santorum isn't well known enough or stable enough to be widely electable, Gingrich is incediary and unelectable, and Rob Paul won't get the nomination. Ugh. I wish we had another choice.

Great rhetoric, but what has he accomplished with that leadership. The only thing you've pointed out is people like him and America more. That is not a leader. That is a cheerleader. He has helped the economy, but at a very anemic pace. He has given us a health care "fix" that is atrocious and effectively killed any hope of ever reaching single payer. He has run up the national debt further than all that came before him combined.

And you adore him for it. I'd be willing to bet the earlier poster is right. You must not be from America. The only ones I could see adoring him are those sitting back and watching while America implodes under him.

President Obama won the 2012 election thanks to the Bush Administration, nothing more. The United States invaded a sovereign nation based on falsified intelligence reports that were created, in part, by Dick Cheney and the CIA, promising WMD's would be found in Iraq. The United States spent almost two trillion dollars on a war that was created for George's father, as a way of getting even with Saddam. Then the Bush Administration deregulated Wall Street and the Banking Industry. Alan Greenspan told America's Seniors to mortgage their homes, using their equity to boost the economy. When the crash came in September 2008, George Bush pulled a colossal scam, scaring the American Public into a belief that that Wall Street was about to crash. Secretary of the Treasury Paulson convinced Congress that Wall Street needed $700 Billion Dollars, with $350 Billion going to his old friends at AIG and Goldman Sachs. Congress actually gave Paulson immunity from future prosecution. I stopped voting Republican in 2008, and I am not a Super PAC, just an American who spends every day speaking to other Americans. We are going to take back the House and keep control of the Senate. The Republican Party is focused on the extreme right wing of the party and the 1% Club. Trust me, the Tea Party cannot pull the same scare tactics on the Elderly that they pulled in 2010. The Elderly, the Middle Class, the Poor, the Hispanics and Latinos are going to come in droves for the Landslide of 2012. We the People are going to vote in 2012.

Statistically this is balony, even if it appears to make sense otherwise (which it doesn't). You need a much larger sample of numbers. This is like those stupid Superbowl statistics. After about 100 more presidential elections (and Superbowls), let's revisit.

No doubt that Obama will win – he has not even started his $ 1 Billion Dollar media Campaign yet – – but the Oscars prove that RICH artists can create "Loan Corporations" and pay only 20% TAX – and the President LOVES it – while he cries about people paying only 17% "double tax" on previously taxed earnings – and he wants to DOUBLE their taxes – – I say "Loan Corporations" for ALL ! ! Not just for the Hollywood Types who LOVE Obama – -

Bravo Annie! What makes me laugh is how the Repubs are all now whining about the gas prices... that it's Obama's fault. However, when they went to $4 under Bush it had nothing to do with him. Does anyone think it's just coincidence that gas prices under Obama for the first two years remained around $2+ but ever since the Repubs took over the House they have been climbing ever since?

This is from T. Boone Pickens who owns BP:

The worry over increasing fuel prices in the United States rests in part on a lack of understanding of the energy market. Energy prices in America are by far the cheapest in the world, with Europeans paying more than double to fuel their cars and with natural gas costing four or five times as much in Europe and China.

Promises of much lower fuel prices are a fantasy, Pickens said, since the world's demand for oil is roughly equal to the amount that is being produced.

Pickens said the media should challenge GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on his claim that if elected he can lower gasoline prices to $2.50 a gallon.

"You've got Donald Trump saying don't pay OPEC $100 for the oil. Just tell 'em you'll give them $50.

"Really? I go into Trump's hotel, it's $1,000 for a suite and I say I'm not going to give you that, I'll give you $200. I'm on the street looking for another place to sleep. You can't tell 'em I'll give you $50 when the world market is $100. It just doesn't work that way."

And if all you people here that say Obama is making things worse think that one of these Repub candidates will make it better than you're smoking something much stronger!! Why in the world would anyone want the same people back in charge that started the mess in the first place? What did you all expect from Obama – he's one man that has no help from his Congress trying to steer the ship in the right direction and he is doing that. It may not be as quickly as most would like but the mess he's had to clean up was enormous. He has not made things worse as there are many indicators that say otherwise. Jobs have been going overseas for years and he is trying to provide incentives for them to move back here which they are starting to. Do you ever watch ABC news and their reports on the companies that are moving jobs back to the good ole' USA?

        1. The country was LOSING 750,000 jobs PER MONTH when the last Republican president left office.
        2. The country has been ADDING 100,000 PER MONTH for the last 2 years. Over 2.5 million jobs have been added in the last 2 years. Check the Bureau of Labor Statistics if you don't buy it.
        3. GDP was SHRINKING by an astonishing 8.9% when last Republican president left office.
        4. GDP has been INCREASING for the last 9 quarters.
        5. Osama bin Laden was still drawing breath when the last Republican president left office. He has a new address now. It's not quite as sunny as his compound in Pakistan.
        6. Moammar Gadhafi was still drawing breath when the last Republican president left office. He's history now – for less than 1/1000th of the cost of the Iraq war and with ZERO AMERICAN CASUALTIES.
        7. The Iraq and Afghanistan wars were still in full swing when the last Republican president left office.
        8. 4500 American lives nearly a trillion dollars later, the justifiably unpopular war in Iraq is over. The end of the war in Afghanistan is also on the horizon – 10,000 troops came home in 2011 and about 25,000 will come home before summer's end, 2012. All American troops will be out by the end of 2014.
        9. When the last Republican president left office, insurance companies were still free to drop people when they got sick or deny coverage to kids with asthma (a "preexisting condition"). Medical bills were the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in America and Republicans hadn't lifted a finger to change this.
        10. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies will no longer be allowed to drop people or deny coverage on technicalities. Personal bankruptcies due to medical bills will decline dramatically in the coming years (since most of them are due to insurance company chicanery or lack of insurance).

Lowest Unemployment in over 3 years, 23 months of private sector job growth, Dow up 60% since bush, Bin Laden dead, Troops out of Iraq. 2.4 million more with health ins., seniors saving millions on drugs, and record deportations.

Yeah, he's doing a terrible job.

        • Almost a great depression

Rex Raptor has it right. Do you guys know how bad it was when GWB left office? 2 unpaid for wars, Financial sector and wall street meltdown. We were clearly headed for a Great Depression. Economists recommended we spend 3 times as much as was spent to head off the depression and hold it to a recession. The blocking (by congress) of other stimulus plans and everything else is why the recovery is so miserable. Obama with his stimulus and his car industry bailouts (and Bush on the financial bailouts) did it. Yes Obama saved major American industries like the auto industry and our World dominating financial sector. He stopped things from becoming unimaginably horrible. He also signed key healthcare legislation, Equal pay legislation, Consumer protections and killed Osama Bin Laden and along the way figured out how to accomplish America's military objectives with minimum expense and minimum American Casulaties (see Khadafi). Do you really think Romney or Santorum would do better? Or are you so blinded by personal dislike for our president that you can't give him the same credit you would give Romney if he was president and had done the same things?

Julie: In 2008, Obama won the popular vote by over 7 points. He received 365 electoral votes, nearly 70% of the total. Maybe not a "landslide" victory in the conventional sense, but it was one of the strongest and most convincing victories since George H.W. Bush in 1988.

There sure is a lot of hate in your words and your statements. You should try to actually have a non-name calling discussion with an opposing group if you want them to be in agreement or if you want them to help your cause. If you don't work in a constructive way, it ends up taking a lot more time and a lot more effort for you to get your ideals to become reality. Try it...you might be surprised and you also wouldn't appear to need blood pressure medication.

We should not monopolize this means. I think it's unfair to other posters. Therefore I will no longer be responding.

However, you may want to admit (consider?) that you and I are closer than when we started this exchange. At least, I opine that way. We still disagree, but I thought it was still a HEALTHY chat.

Maybe I was wrong about that but all I see from your post is complaints about the President so I don't think I'm far off.

When he gets re-elected, he will begin his term in 2013 and that will last until 2019 (January 20, 2013 to January 19, 2017.) That's 4 years. This is only February 2012 so he still has just under 11 months to go on this term. I think it's safe to round that up to 1 year. 4 + 1 = 5. That's how he has 5 years. Think smarter, not harder.

The most important message you’ll ever read: For us to get to go to heaven (and be made right with God), we must simply place our faith (belief/trust) in that Jesus Christ died for our sins (wrongs against God), was buried, and came back to life the third day after His crucifixion, thus making Jesus our Savior (the One Who paid for our sins) and Lord (equal to God because He was sinless). If we have true faith, we will let Christ be Lord of our life (thus telling us how we shall live) instead of us deciding how we’ll live without regards to God’s will as we used to live.

    • Well, you needn't

This article is about post hoc fallacy. People reason like this all of the time. Consider this one: "Obama took over in 2009 and the national debt has increased 5 trillion since then. Therefore, Obama caused the debt increase." This is clearly flawed reasoning, as most of the debt increase in recent years is not attributable to President Obama (for details, see http://www(dot)washingtonpost(dot)com/business/economy/adding-to-the-deficit-bush-vs-obama/2012/01/31/gIQAQ0kFgQ_graphic(dot)html)

The fact that event B follows event A does not imply that event A caused event B. Any article that reminds people of this basic fact is a good article.

We are bombarded every day my the mainstream media about the job that the Obama administration is doing. Really?! There is REALLY no real story to tell! That is why the Democratic party resorts to denigrating anyone that disagrees with the president; Republican and/or Democrat, white, Black or Latino.

You may think that the job and housing market is coming back, and Im sure that is what you will now be told over the next year. However, it is not, and as a country we are in trouble. We are cutting the wrong programs, fighting wars and invading places for no reason except for our own paranoid thoughts, and we are mindlessly supporting politicians that do not know or care that we exist.

Having said that, I don't think that a Republican or Democrat can fix these issues. It would take a person that understands the average struggles, and the day to day grind of the American person. That candidate will be neither Romney or Obama. They do not care about you, or myself. Choosing to be a Dem or Repub is basically saying that you cannot think for yourself, the 2 party system is simply outdated and broken.

Wow, it seems the haters grasped onto this one in a hurry. You all are running so scared it's beyond reason. Lighten up – this was just an opinion piece pointing out some fun facts which may or may not hold true in 2012. All of you that keep insisting that President Obama has made things worse are really living in an alternate universe. The economy was down the drain in 2008 which was one reason Obama was elected in the first place. He, nor McCain, could have possibly stopped the bleeding on a dime which it seems you all expected. Things were going to get worse before getting better and President Obama made that clear but we are now on the right path moving forward and if you don't see the signs of this then you are in the dark.

I suppose it's Bush's fault that this administration...under a Dem congress cranked up spending to record levels? yah...I guess you're right...NOT! Get real.

No Bobby, you get real! Sorry, but all you whiners about Obama spending us further into debt are just latching onto something to pin on him. I don't care who became President in 2008 as they would have done the same thing to stop us from going into a Depression. Remember, McCain suspending his campaign to go to Washington to help with the bailout. Please, look at the reality of the situation. We ARE moving forward as there are many indicators saying so, but for some reason you all just won't see that as you don't want Obama to succeed which in turn means you don't want the country to succeed so your party can take over. Heaven help us all if that happens again!

How the heck do some people think when they would consider voting for a guy like Mitt Romney? This guy wants to be the President of a nation that HE hides his money from. If that doesn't tell you about the character of a man, then it must speak volumes about him being the highest elected official in the land. Imagine that, a man running for President that hides his money from the government that he wants to head. This is like putting Berney Madoff in charge of the Treasury. Don't you people think for one minute, and find this to be very disturbing? A President hiding his money and wealth from his own government.
If you hate the right to health care and women's health, then viote for Sanitorium or whom ever, but voting or any republicant in this day and age simply tell me that you are an unlearnt, ignorant FOOL.

I thought Planned Parenthood was providing health care to women who couldn't afford it...so what women are getting denied...unless all they are REALLY providing is abortion services? The issue of making religious orgs provide something that goes against their belief system isn't about a woman's health...it's about separation of church/state. Nothing is free...the money has to come from somewhere. I guess as long as it's coming from those who "have it"...the "have nots" don't see a problem with getting something without having to put any more effort into EARNING it.

Actually the reverse would be true. Obama has slowly righted the sinking ship that the Republicans left us. Think of the cruise ship in Italy. That is the state the Republicans left us with in 2008. A herculean effort has been required to right the ship. It may still be listing but it's far steadier than it was in 2008. The Republicans will bring the dynamite to blow bigger holes in the hull and take away many human rights, if they have their say. It's up to us to say "No way!"

The Obama supporters continue to come up with every reason why Obama should, and will be reelected ... except his actual record of accomplishments (or rather lack there of). So, they always have to rely on demonizing his opponents ... or, touting his popularity ... or, showing photo ops with celebrities. This is wearing thin with millions of Americans, who are directly experiencing the hardships which have resulted from Obama's failed policies. Even the constant pro-Obama drum beat, coming from the B.O. campaign, and the media, can't hide the dramatically higher price of gas and groceries ... while home values and the dollar continue to sink in value.

Why has be not allowed the release of any of his school records. Even college?
Because he was at the bottom of the class.

Obama will never do anything about the gas prices except let them rise.
He has NO interest in having the gas prices go down.

The only reason that Obama is sitting in the White House is:
George Saros bought the election and put Obama in the White House.

And his reelection has been bought and paid for again.

Saros and Big Oil are raping us now and will continue to do so for the next 4 years.

How else do you explain a Jr Senator who had to claim Child care credit on his tax returns.

And now that he is in the White House is claiming Foreign Tax Credit in excess of 1 million.

And he will NOT provide detailed info on what they are either.

    http://www.taxhistory.org/www/website.nsf/Web/PresidentialTaxReturns

I suggest that you are bored with the Academy Awards because you don't know anything about the nominated movies, the actors or the film industry. So, because you lack anything but the most superficial knowledge of those subjects, you don't really have any appreciation or respect for the Academy Awards. My guess is that the same holds true with regard to your feelings about President Obama. People like you who have no clue what has been achieved and what is at stake are the main reason why we had to endure George W. Bush for 8 years.

If you really want to see some good movies, watch some of the recent foreign films. The plots are generally better, no special effects, and the actors seem to be able to express to the audience the depth of their characters. An besides, most of the films produced by Hollywood are done in Canada, where labor is cheaper.

        February 29, 2012 at 3:30 pm | Reply
        • Keith

Labor isn't cheaper. Cities like Vancouver just welcome the film industry by allowing them unrestricted access to shoot in places. Unlike here in the states where Hollywood is demonized at every turn, instead of being treated like the multi-billion dollar industry that they are. Americans also get royally po'ed if a street is closed for filming and they have to go two blocks down to make their right hand turn. Oh the humanity!!!!

Thank you; we are obviously too dumb to notice any opinions or media bias on our own. It's an article about how movie awards predict the elections; does it strike you as just a little bit humorous? Like, maybe they aren't really suggesting it's true?
