Criticism grows over Marissa Mayer's ban on working from home

Marissa Mayer's new policy banning employees from working at home has ignited a firestorm.
Maureen Dowd of the New York Times writes: "Mayer's bold move looks retro and politically incorrect."

While Virgin CEO Richard Branson calls the policy "backwards" and says,"Yours truly has never worked out of an office, and never will."

The Donald weighed in, tweeting:

    Maybe she just wants people to quit so she doesn't have to pay severence to cut overhead.

    I've had the opportunity to work from home and I will say that I work HARDER when I am home than when I am at work. There is the notion that they will think that I'm goofing off since I'm home, so I ensure that I am clearly productive.

    The opposite happens when in the office. There are many more social disruptions which keep one from being productive. People stopping by your office/desk to chat. Your boss stopping by for idle conversations, etc.

    Working remotely can be considered a success if productivity is measurable. If there is a project with a deadline and clear tasks/expectations, then an employee who completes their project on deadline can be considered to have been productive.

    Shouldn't matter if they were out of the office or off-site. Were they measurably productive on site?

    Just my two cents!

    I happen to agree with Marissa. When a company is struggling as Yahoo may be, bring the troops into the office. More positive work will and can be done there than at home, babysitting the kids, animals etc. I spent 30yrs in corp, before cell lphones and laptops.
