Four months after the Newtown shooting rampage, Pres. Obama continues to push for new gun laws.
Sandy Hook families to ride AF-1 to DC, lobby Senate
Obama is back in Connecticut speaking at the University of Hartford after meeting with the victims' families. The president is expected to talk about the gun safety laws Connecticut recently passed and highlight the Newtown families' role in lobbying for those new laws.
Democratic Senate leaders are set to meet Tuesday to try to figure out when to bring their gun control bill to the floor.
But is it already too late?
Outfront tonight: Mark Glaze, Director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns; and Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America - a pro-gun lobbying group that's a fraction of the size of the NRA, but perhaps even more powerful in Washington.
The New York Times calls Gun Owners of America "an influential force" and says it was this group's "lobbying blitz" that "helps explain why a bipartisan Senate deal on background checks remains elusive."
JOSH LYMAN: We lost.
PRES. BARTLET: We know.
(West Wing, "Guns Not Butter")
The way that Larry Pratt seems to ignore the humanity of the Sandy Hook parents as inconvenient makes me a little ill... If the love of a parent gripping onto the memory of a child they can only speak to in their dreams isn't greater than the power of a political lobby & their checkmarks & scorecards, I don't know what we're doing here with this beautiful experiment known as America.
