Parties and Protests mark May Day

It's the first day of May also known as May Day! When people around the world hold parades and parties, unlike holidays like Christmas New Year's.

Different people celebrate May Day in very, very different ways.

Erin Burnett is OutFront with a few examples from around the world.

Long ago and far away in a tiny New England town, we celebrated May Day by hanging May baskets on the doors of friends and sweethearts. We rang the doorbell, ran, and hid. Our target was supposed to emerge, find us, and kiss us. Sometimes, alas, they stubbornly remained indoors.

Work went into those baskets! Wallpaper sample books offered the prettiest basic material, but construction paper would do. Styles were numerous - cones, squares, rolls - but they all needed a handle or loop to hang from the door knob. We would cut doilies and staple or glue little pieces on the basket like lace. Then we filled the baskets with leaves, flowers, and a few gumdrops, jelly beans, or even chocolate.

I miss May Day! Why has this not been commercialized?
