How will the NBA respond to Clippers owner Donald Sterling's alleged racist remarks?

Update: The National Basketball Association has banned Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling from basketball for life and fined him $2.5 million racist remarks attributed to him in recordings posted online, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced Tuesday.

(CNN) - When Commissioner Adam Silver speaks to the media Tuesday about the NBA's findings in the investigation into racist remarks attributed to Clippers owner Donald Sterling, the league's players hope it includes the most severe penalties.

"When a hint of cancer is shown, you have to cut it out immediately, and I feel that's where the players are today," Kevin Johnson, the former all-star who is the chairman of the National Basketball Players Association's executive committee, told CNN's "Erin Burnett OutFront."

Johnson said the players trust that the new commissioner, on the job for less than three months, will find the right penalties for Sterling, who has owned the Clippers for almost 30 years.

"They don't think he's worthy to be an owner," said Johnson, also the mayor of Sacramento, "so whether there's a sanction that includes a suspension, whether there's a sanction that includes a hefty fine ... the players feel very strongly that he's not fit to be an owner and a part of this NBA family."

Take the OutFront Poll

The NBA has scheduled a news conference for 2 p.m. ET Tuesday.

Erin, It's very wrong what happened but what is the difference between USA and a Communist Country when in your own house you can not say what you want and remember( because we are mad some time we say thinks that we don't meant) ( which is not the case of this guy) but where is the freedom of expression the privacy of your own house ?. USA is going the wrong way already and every day is worse. Soon this will be another job for the paparazzi to tape and lessen to private conversation .My house is my castle and is private you guys should be very careful where you take this will affect the entire nation.Already a lot of freedom is lost and racism is bought ways:some whites talk about blacks and blacks do the same about whites but now we can tape each other and expose each other...very sad. We need few generation and more education to eliminate racism this is not the way .We loved USA for what was and represent not for what is becoming.USA is getting closer to communism. Why is USA so much into Rusia? they should worry about there own country and spend money in there people to bring back the real USA not trying to put order in somebody back yard and with not success. Sorry for my English .Love your show and Anderson and Zacharia .

I am a 54 year old italian lady, and while I can not apologize enough for the lack of education of some of my human counterparts, what I want all of you fellows on the clippers team to know is that you are all MY children too. My heart aches for all of you. But you have all conducted yourselves with such class and dignity.Don't let this sad old man affect you. Go out there and WIN–WIN–WIN!! For somewhere out there in the big crowd of people who love you is one little Italian lady whose heart is all yours...

It is not up to society to police everyone . This was said in a private conversation not out in public. Therefore private life is separate from public life.

This was happening in Communist Country when you where not saved even in your own house and you could not express your thinking no freedom. Sad that USA is going this way. Let me say I believe this guy should be punished for his remarks but to be tape him
in his own house? and nobody see nothing wrong with this ? this will show you how USA is changing and not for the good.

Earvin Johnson & Guggenheim Partners should own the L.A. Clippers, as they're holding the mantle for Branch Rickey as the owners of the Dodgers organization. Plus, you know from his work with Canyon Johnson Venture Fund that Magic's got love for Los Angeles & all the same people off-put by this fiasco. Heck, it was the Magic Man who opened the 1st Starbucks franchise in South Central.

Sterling should be fired!!! He obviously hates black people, look at his NBA team (wait it's almost all black). He must pay them poorly (nope, nowhere near the bottom of the league). He should have never said those things during that interview (oh, it was a private conversation). Never mind. Unless someone has proof his beliefs caused him to discriminate against someone unjustly in the league, the NBA has no business doing anything to him.

Although I believe his girlfriend intentionally exposed his awful and disgusted feelings; I am not surprise because this type of feelings unfortunately still exist in 2014 especially in people like him with the means affect real change such as racism
