Why has Bergdahl not spoken to his parents?

New outrage and blame over Bowe Bergdahl's capture and release.

Some of Bergdahl's former platoon members testified before Congress that the Army sergeant deserted his post nearly five years ago and, they say, as a result - six soldiers died searching for him.

Bergdahl deal scrutinized at congressional hearing

Currently, Bergdahl is being exposed to some of the media coverage about him. It's part of his recovery process, but 18 days after his release, the 28-year-old has yet to speak with his family.

CNN's Ed Lavandera is OutFront with more.

He's obviously hiding something he doesn't want them to see – most likely the fact that he's a traitor for abandoning his post in a combat zone, and that he willingly surrendered to the enemy.
Now he's embarrassed to face his mother & father, as that would mean facing the truth of his actions after they worked so hard to try and free him (only to find out that he willingly put himself in that very position of captivity).

This is so touching! Bowe undrestands what his parents went through during his captivity and meeting them soon is not advisable .According to the source he doesn't know how to speak English at all which is another valid resoan why Bowe needs time before he can meet his parents .Healing is a process and yes he need time to heal ! ppl must stop judging him and appreciate what US gv has done! imagen if it was your son! your brother or sister!

It's predictable that he doesn't want to speak to his interfering helicopter parents. They probably never let him alone, so he joined a couple branches of the military to try to become independent. Just when he thought he found a few new friends and a new life in Afghanistan, they go and mess it up for him again in the world media, no less.

His father speaking Arabic in the Rose Garden blew me away. To me that put a whole new twist on things. Of course everybody knows all the other stuff by now. But after 5 years suddenly? they want ransom money? To top it off he gets traded for 5 yes that's 5 of the hardest of the hard Taliban leaders not just Joe Shmoes. At first everybody's like yay we got out guy back. Then when all the truth started coming out everyone's like what the heck did we just do?

I do not understand why this philosophical guy went into the military. Hello ! these recruits are fingers on triggers, kill what you can while you can . Nothing about helping cultures in distress. He was likely at high risk of getting a " friendly discharge" in his butt. He saved himself by running out and getting picked up by the Taliban. At least, they kept him alive. Reality check needed here.

You're dumb. Extremely, almost to a hyperbolic level. Do military men and women sometimes have to shoot people? Absolutely. Do some people join the service because they might be put into a situation like that? Absolutely. But to say all service-members are itchy-trigger-finger having fratricides waiting to happen is ridiculous. If his team/squad mates didn't trust him to do what is sometimes necessary (give a hostile a healthy dose of lead poisoning), they would simply have left him behind the wire or in his vehicle. He was in no danger from the troops around him, and for you to imply that he willfully and knowingly abandoned his post in a hostile country in order to save himself from American forces is absolutely insane.

Our country is weaker because of this trade. If ever one or more of the "Guantanamo Five" kills an American GI or civilian, Obama will have to answer for their actions. If Bergdahl really deserted, then he deserved to be left behind. If Bergdahl did not desert, then he needed to stick it out to the end (his death if he had to) as an American soldier in time of war. This swap was not a political prisoner "Cold War Swap" between the USA and the USSR, it was a swap for terrorists and murderers.

I keep reading references to the 6 soldiers who are said to have died searching for Bergdahl.

But an article in Time magazine that listed these 6 brave men did not give the slightest bit of proof that any of them died actually searching for Bergdahl, but rather during the normal violence they faced every day in the province they were stationed. In all but two of the stories, the men were engaged in normal patrols, which they would have been engaged in with or without Bergdahl's being missing.

For two of the soldiers, the article stated that they were looking for Bergdahl, but there was no indication that they weren't simply keeping an eye out for him while conducting a normal patrol.

You simply can't blame this man for every death that occurred after he left his post.

If he did indeed leave his post – then he needs to face a military court and stand charges.

But blaming him for those who fell in this war is, or should be beneath America.

pure BS. These guys lost their lives as they would have, anyway. It had nothing to do with this poor guy, but they would like to pin it on him. Just as a payback. I think he was in danger with these fellows and he took the high road to save himself. Guess what ? he is alive now. We have too many of these killing recruits as they like nothing better than to kill. These are the same guys we see torturing innocent animals in slaughter houses. They are monsters. Sorry to say but it is what they are. No souls, no compassion as killing is their joy.

They cannot bring into his enviroment anyone untrained (parents) who may bring something into the conversation they do not want him to know yet. This hospital in Texas is where all POW's go since Vietnam. Leave them alone to do what they know how to do.

    June 20, 2014 at 6:03 pm | Reply
    • Steve

This is not treason because the Commander in Chief had a soldier that was in enemy hands returned to the U.S.

If the man indeed deserted – which these men claim – then he should be tried for desertion – and perhaps for manslaughter if military law allows for those charges in relation to the death of men searching for him.

But is has been and MUST ALWAYS BE the policy of the United States that you LEAVE NO MAN BEHIND. No matter how he ended up in the enemies camp – you go get him, trade for him, do what it takes to bring him home. Only then does how it happened matter.

You and I are asking our men and women in uniform to go into harms way for us, with the possibility that they can be taken prisoner or killed. We owe them the absolute guarantee that we will find them and bring them home if we can. Otherwise how do you dare ask them to risk it all on our behalf?

Most people are more inclined to believe what his platoon members are saying, than anything that comes from obama and any of his stooges. They have no reason, or anything to gain, so why would they lie about the deserter? Now obama and his administration on the other hand, do nothing but lie, so why would any rational thinking person believe them? The dude skipped out on his team members in combat, that's deserting in the face of the enemy, and that calls for the death penalty.

The real tragedy is the treatment of the soldiers that served with Bergdahl. The Obama administration is trying to sell a different narrative than from the reality of what happened, according to the soldiers who were there. When the soldiers spoke out, the Obama administration and the press are trying to defame them. Shame on the the press and the Obama administration. The truth will win out, rather than their attempted spin on it.

Unless you want to live in Russia or some other country that the US – YOU do not get to judge this man based on news reports and second hand stories.

The Military has a very strict code of justice. They will fine the facts and if they believe this man guilty of a crime, he will be court martialed and get what he deserves.

But that has nothing to do with the Commander in Chiefs responsibility to do whatever he can to return any US service man or woman back to the US. Be it to proclaim them a hero or to have them face charges – they first and foremost need to be brought home.

Do you want a soldier to know that FOX NEWS or MSNBC get to decide if they are freed from the enemy if they are taken prisoner? Or should it be the Commander in Chief and the Military that decide?

Recent news reports of other maintream (eg generally reliable) press state that the six soldiers were killed after the search for Bergdahl ended. Also other reports say he had gone off before as had other soldiers but had returned. If all else is true, it's not a strong case to say on June 18 to quote inaccurate information. It doesnt sound like he deserted and the timing of the deaths of the other soldiers and the end of the search for him can be confirmed or denied with a little homework. I dont see any effort to get the story straight. It probably would be helpful to the families of the soldiers that were killed to know more.

It made me sick to see Jane Fonda praised on TV a few nights ago. She should be in prison for life for what she did in Vietnam. Yes, I was in Vietnam when she expressed her desire to shot down some "American dogs". Wish she had come south on a USO tour after that. She would have had a serious accident real quick.

You are absolutely right. This guy had an alcohol-fueled (?) mental lapse– No sane person would simply walk unarmed directly into unsecured territory of the enemy. I don't think he intended to desert, but naively thought he would hang out unscathed for a while with some Afghan friends and return to his post–something that many soldiers apparently have done with locals since Europe & Vietnam– and if they return in a timely fashion, not much is made of it– too idealistic & trusting maybe, but not a traitor/deserter. It's not like he boarded a flight to Paris or the Bahamas–he deserves some compassion & care, the last 5 years have been no joyride for him & he will have to live with knowing others in his garrison died bravely searching for him. I understood that already he has refused his promotion. So he has a history of mental illness with the Coast Guard but also of being a kind quiet cerebral person of good character. Do you think those comrades that died bravely searching for him would wish for him to now be so hastily condemned & used as political pawn? I think NOT. I am neither Nazi Liberal Democrat NOR Rabid Republican, I am in independent that votes by my conscience on the individual merit of each candidate or issue. It is national political extremism/polarization and obstructionist unwillingness to consider any moderate course of beneficial action that will destroy America– not radical jihad Muslims, but radical politically extreme Americans?

People in the rear would sneak into town from time to time. But in the field? NEVER! Living in your protected sate you have no idea how important each person is on an outpost.

He's probably being prevented from speaking with anyone, while the Army are thoroughly 'de-briefing' him, i..e intimidating and brainwashing him to make sure he won't make any anti-war remarks. Its precisely because Bergdahl is an intelligent individual who was horrified by the US's destructive actions in Afghanistan that he is being vilified by the right-wing with the willing collaboration of the media.

Seriously? The guy VOLUNTEERED to be put into that position, and now you want to believe that he was horrified by the destruction caused by the US military? You're not very smart are you?

"US's destructive actions"? Obviously you've never served but seem to enjoy bad-mouthing those who do. This Country's military destroys only that which needs to be destroys and we treat people, both military and civilian a hell of a lot better and more humane than our enemies treat us or would treat you if not for your military keeping them away from here..

He left his unit because he wanted to kill, he went looking for the enemy. He left the U.S. to be with them. The video shows he was well fed, not beaten like others have been. In the video it showed the so called captors talking to him as a friend. So stop drinking Obama's Kool-Aid.

Skeptic, I doubt he is being vilivied by the right wing collaborating with the media. HA! Far cry from THAT ever happening since 99 percent of the media is left wing and married into The White House.

      Skeptic,
for what I read, I understand your point of view; have you ever served in the armed forces? Have you had to had your life in the hands of another? what if when he walked off a group of Taliban came in a slaughtered all of the troops who were depending on him to keep them safe. is the same situation if you were to walk away from you children and let all kinds of pedophiles and rapist come in to your house while you went out and had a little stroll!!!

Skeptic, thanks for showing the world what a useless two legged oxygen thief you are. Sounds like you know all about being a sniveling coward, just like your useless hero Bergdahl. Neither one of you mommy's boys are worth the price of a bullet to put you out of your sad little miserable life....Now run back downstairs to mom's basement, its time for her to bring you your kool-aid and twinkies.....

I think he already knows about the turmoil surrounding him. Military setting or not, people are people ; and they DO talk.

Obama can't catch a break. He thought this would be a worthwhile effort but not only are Republicans calling him out on the high profile Taliban leaders given up, his own fellow soldiers are non too happy with Bergdahl and the photo op of him uniting with his parents may never happen.

No obama did this to take some heat off him and make people like him again. When people found out the punk was a deserter and obama broke the law freeing him it backfired. Obama cant catch a break because he sucks and isnt fit to lead a country

boo,you cannot be serious.obama can't catch a break? what are you smoking?he broke the friggin law dummy.he did this on his own and traded a deserter for 5 murderers.sound like an even trade to you fellow?

Really? do you think he deserves a break?
think very well what he did. If you had a killer roaming your house and gets caught, but said killer gets let go again and put back in the same place he was picked up; how safe would you feel knowing that he was behind bars and you could sleep in peace, now he is out and ready to kill at the first chance he can. you may be the next target. think again what you say.
