The Number: iPad meet your competition, the "Surface"

Mystery solved!! Microsoft unveiled a tablet to compete with Apple called "The Surface."

Microsoft, the khaki pants of tech has had geeks the world over foaming at the retainer after issuing a very exclusive invitation to Hollywood's milk studios for a super-secret product announcement.

The mysterious event could be the first step in the company's attempt to transform itself from geek to chic.

The big question remains – will Monday's unveiling finally be enough to kill the iPad?

That brings us to tonight's number: 3 million.

That's how many iPads Apple sold in the first three days after its launch, which was only in 2010.

Rivals have released dozens of alternatives in an attempt to catch Apple, but none have come close to that number.

Microsoft has been chasing the tablet dream for 12 years now –

Will it finally deliver?

Tweet us let us know, will you try a new Microsoft iPad rival?

Microsoft unveils Surface tablet to rival iPad

Upending one of the world's most successful business strategies over the past three decades, Microsoft has developed a Windows tablet computer of its own design.

The company on Monday unveiled the Surface, a PC tablet that runs a yet-to-be released version of its Windows operating system called Windows 8. The device is the first commercial PC that Microsoft has directly designed and sold.

The tablet features many of the now-standard tablet specs, including a 10.6 inch high-definition touchscreen and front and rear facing cameras, which all fit into a 9.3 millimeter, 1.5-pound frame.

hmm, the surface will be wifi only and price starts at $599?
after more research the Surface tablet does not look so appealing.
now it just reminds me of the Dell Inspiron Duo which had a flip screen so the user had an option to use the machine as a regular laptop or flip the screen over and use it as a touch screen tablet device.
    oh well.
come to think of it i would rather have the Dell but the Duo is no longer in production so would have to look on Ebay or Amazon for used or possibly a new machine.
2012, the year of "happy tablets" ? lol

this is meant to be choosing an Apple or Microsoft Tablet.
as far as price range Microsoft wins, more value for your money.
the Surface will definitely be something fun to use.
right now just wondering if the dual front/rear facing dual hd cams will work simultaneously.
Windows 8 will be awesome on it as it is already really cool on my basic laptop.

Hey, 'truckin guy': This comment, "...right now just wondering if the dual front/rear facing dual hd cams will work simultaneously...." -End quote- gives people the idea of spying...Only the government of your (and my) country should be able to do this....Again, HA, HA, HA. -Gives new meaning to, "Looking over your shoulder..." (An "I Spy Concept.)

lol, i hear ya, i was just getting an idea in my head of mounting it somehow to the frame of a trailer see how cool it would look, but only for a short ride. i think it would make a cool video and a nice observation of traffic behavior.

But Kevin, then you can't look your coolest at your local coffee shop..."Where they snidely deposit ludicrous stares at those with lap tops, because they look so...so, geeky." I mean, afterall,, the lap top has a protective cover for the screen whereas the tablet simply has the screen..."Like who's dumb idea was that...?" ! Lap tops have less smudges....
