Iran's foreign ministry is applauding the appointment of former Senator Chuck Hagel to lead the Pentagon.
"We hope there will be practical changes in American foreign policy and that Washington becomes respectful of the rights of nations," says Iran Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast.
Meanwhile, in the U.S., Hagel's previous comments are becoming a lightning rod for his critics.
Hagel once backed efforts to bring Tehran to the table for talks and in 2006, he said: "I would say that a military strike against Iran, a military option, is not a viable, feasible, responsible option. … I believe a political settlement will be the answer."
