Conn. Police: Lanza's mother gave him money to buy firearm

Newly-released evidence in the Newtown massacre shows that Adam Lanza's mother, Nancy, gave him a holiday card with a check - earmarked specifically to buy a gun, according to police.

Lanza used his mother's guns to kill her, then shot down 26 people at Sandy Hook elementary last December, before killing himself.

Investigators also revealed:

  • They found 16-hundred rounds of ammunition in the Lanza home
  • A gun safe found in Adam's room
  • The shooting rampage in the school took less than five minutes

What does this latest information tell us about Adam Lanza and his mother?

Many gun owners have those many rounds because it is cheaper to buy in bulk for shooting at the range. Owning 1600 cartridges does not make you a killer. A day at the range can use a few hundred rounds alone. Owning a fast and powerful car does not make you a street racer or a geteaway driver. Having a few hundred gallons of gasoline and matches does not make you an arsonist. Owning a sword or knife does not make you a killer. Adam Lanza`s mother was irresponsible and stupid for allowing someone like him to be around guns. She should have had all of her guns locked up and had trigger locks on them too. If she had given him a car and he drove it into a crowd of children and killed them that way, we would be holding her responsibe, not all car owners.
