Obama renews call to close Gitmo

President Obama delivered what was billed as his first major speech on counterterrorism in his second term. We were prepared to hear him lay out his policy on drone strikes and we were prepared to hear him discuss his long-time promise to close the military detention  facilities at Guantanamo Bay.

His speech was interrupted by a protester who loudly advocated for the closure of the Guantanamo Bay prison – the same position Obama was stressing in his speech.

Obama heckled by Code Pink leader

"You are commander-in-chief – you can close Guantanamo today," Medea Benjamin, activist and co-founder of Code pink shouted during a portion of Obama's speech in which the president outlined changes in policy that included an all-out push to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility in Cuba. She later yelled, "It's been 11 years!"

One day after taking office, January 22, 2009, President Obama signed an executive order to close Guantanamo Bay within a year. He reiterated that promise throughout his time in office.

Why is the facility still open?

OutFront tonight: Chris Lawrence, who recently traveled to the detention facility.
