American woman allegedly gang-raped in India

Authorities in India say a 31-year-old American woman was gang-raped just outside Manali, a popular tourist destination.

The woman was reportedly hitch-hiking back to her resort, when she got into a truck with a group of men around 1 a.m. who, allegedly took her to an isolated area and raped her.

Indian police raid 'hideouts' in search for American woman's attackers

No information has been released on the victim's condition and police are currently searching the area for the alleged perpetrators.

This horrible event is just the latest in a string of rapes in India.

  • In December, a 23-year-old woman was gang-raped on a bus – she died of her injuries.
  • In March, a Swiss tourist was raped by 6 men.
  • In April, two young children were raped in separate incidents in New Delhi.

Those attacks sparked public protests demanding better protection for women and the Indian government passed new laws against rape.

And yet these rape cases continue.

Erin Burnett asks what will it take for the "rape culture" to change.
