Deadly shooting at Washington Navy Yard: "He raised and aimed at us and fired"

A gunman opened fire early Monday morning at the Washington Navy Yard, sending the city into a state of panic and chaos.

Here is what we know right now:

  • 12 are dead, plus the gunman, identified by the FBI as 34-year-old Aaron Alexis, a military contractor from Texas
  • At least a dozen people injured
  • The shooting started at about 8:20 a.m.

The shooting took place less than three miles from the White House and the Capitol building, which went into lockdown this afternoon as the FBI searched for at least two other people connected to the shooting.

One official tells CNN he entered the Navy Yard, which has about 3,000 employees, using his military contractor ID. But police, so far, haven't said what the motive could be.

Jessica Yellin is outside the Navy Yard with the latest.
