Men's Wearhouse founder George Zimmer fired via email

"You're fired".

Two words no one ever wants to hear.

Remember when Sarah Silverman said she was fired from "Saturday Night Live" via fax. And AOL CEO Tim Armstrong's firing of one of his employees was caught on tape- the audio went viral.

Today, there's the example of George Zimmer.

The founder of Men's Wearhouse, the man behind the slogan - "You're gonna like the way you look. I guarantee it."

He told Fortune magazine he was ultimately fired over email.

George Zimmer: I got an email about 10 days earlier, which was extremely harsh and mean-spirited. It said that my job status and compensation would remain the same "at this time." Then they basically began throwing me out of my office, and that was as traumatic as when I was actually terminated because, at that point, it was pretty clear what was happening.

His termination made us ask - is there a right and a wrong way to get canned?

    That is just Ruthless and not right! He FOUNDED the company! I'd sue their A**es!!! Get em' Mr. Zimmer!!! They are going to hate the way they get sued!

    Failure to confront an employee face-to-face is both a cop out and cowardly. Job loss is extremely traumatic. Righteous anger is a part of the job loss grieving process. Why make it worse by dehumanizing the process and potentially triggering the opportunity for people to go "postal?" Having worked with over 4,000 people, most people tell me they never saw it coming... First there is shock, then denial, fear, panic and anger. There is an ocean of emotion. Each time I lost my job I thought I had "loser tattooed to my forehead: and "will work for food" tattooed to my chest. But I decided to do something about job search leprosy by starting a non-profit, free support group called Professionals In Transition in 1992. to help deal with the emotional wave of unemployment as discussed in The Job Search Checklist; Everything You Need to Get Back to Work After a Layoff. Failure to face an employee (as difficult as that can be) robs the individual of any type of closure.It dehumanizes the process, and makes it unnecessarily humiliating, making a bad situation much worse.
