On this Martin Luther King holiday, we have a newly released audio recording of a speech Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave on September 12th, 1962 in New York City.
In it, Dr. King commemorates the centennial anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation and discusses the principles of the Declaration of Independence.
"History reveals that America has a schizophrenic personality where these two documents are concerned. On the one hand, she has proudly professed the basic principles inherent in both documents. On the other hand, she has sadly practice the antithesis of these principles." – King said.
"Why do we need heroes? ... Because we’re less than perfect, and we’re always looking for perfection. Somebody who can do it better than we can, somebody who can be an example to us of what we can do, what we can be...
Because he offers us the hope and the example of being something more than we alone think we might be."
