How much of a threat is Vladimir Putin's military?

The U.S. and its allies are waiting for Vladimir Putin's next move.

As Russian forces tighten their hold on the Crimean Peninsula, the next few days will be crucial.

Both the Russian and Ukrainian forces are poised to react to the slightest provocation.

More than 100 unarmed Ukrainian soldiers tried to return to a Ukrainian military base north of Sevastopol Tuesday morning when about a dozen Russian soldiers fired warning shots over their heads.

An eerie mood on the ground in Crimea

Video shot by one of the Ukrainian soldiers showed the Ukrainians continuing to move forward. In the video, a Russian, holding his weapon, orders them to halt their advance: "I have orders; I will shoot you in the legs if you come any further."

Just how powerful is the Russian military?

CNN's Barbara Starr has a detailed look Putin's forces.

I saw the same video looked to me like they were encourged by so mischief maker from kiev. Its important to tell the entire story . You should have mention the ukraine commander yelling we have the backing of the usa and when it was pointed out that he didnt they got the soccerball out and had a kick around. If the ukrainia soldiers were serious they would have taken their guns with them. I think the nutcases in kiev would have loved them to open up on some unarmed soldeirs. The Ukrainians had a ten to one advantage looks to me like they cant see any sense or have no desire to come to blows with their russian comrades. I may be wrong but in this entire affair the ukrainian army hasnt fired a shot. None of the deaths were the responsibility of soldiers from either side . Good on them and long may it last.

When the prophet speaks forth, the wise listens... Prophet T.B.Joshua of the Synagogue Church Of All Nations (SCOAN) has since warned of the consequences of any affront between Russia and Ukrain, does it not make any meaning to you power hungry leaders of doom?

There will be teams of Spetsnaz mixed in. Putin has reformed the military and restored their pride. They will not hesitate to role over any resistance. This has been brewing since the mid-nineties. The US and europe chose to develop NATO and move it closer and closer to Russia. Bill Clinton had a chance to bring them into the European sphere of influence but everyone under estimated the resolve of Putin. The Bear of Russia has no intention of hibernating while they are surrounded by NATO and brushed off by the EU. It is pure arrogance on our part to believe this is a huddled band of reluctant conscripts of the 90"s
