One dead in Virgin SpaceShipTwo explosion

A pilot is dead and another is injured after a Virgin Galactic spaceship exploded in midair during a test flight over the Mojave Desert in California today.

In a statement, Virgin Galactic said Space Ship Two "suffered a serious anomaly resulting in the loss of the vehicle." It is a devastating setback for the company and its founder Sir Richard Branson.

Officials: 1 pilot dead, 1 injured in SpaceShipTwo test-flight failure

Space Ship Two cost nearly half a billion dollars to develop. More than 700 people have already signed up to fly on a Virgin Galactic spaceship, at more than $250-thousand dollars a ticket.

Virgin Galactic is considered by many to be the best hope in private space exploration. Prior to Friday's tragedy, they were hoping to start flights within months.

CNN's Dan Simon is OutFront with the story.

Nurse Kaci Hickox's neighbor: It's common sense, stick to the quarantine

Negotiations between the state of Maine and nurse Kaci Hickox over the limits of her quarantine ended today with no resolution.  The disagreement was over the guidelines on how and when she could leave her house, while staying away from public places.

Early Thursday morning, Hickox and her boyfriend left their Fort Kent home for a bicycle ride around town, followed by state police.

Police were not authorized to arrest her, the governor saying they were there for her protection and to monitor any interactions with the public.

But Gov. Paul LePage said he would use "the full extent of his authority" to protect public safety.

James Majka lives down the street from Hickox in Fort Kent, Maine, a small town with a population just above 4,000. In an interview with CNN's Erin Burnett, Majka says Hickox should have remained in quarantine.
