Would stronger background checks have prevented Santa Monica shooting?

We are learning the suspect accused of killing five people during Friday's shooting spree in Santa Monica suffered from mental health issues.

A law enforcement official tells CNN 23-year-old John Zawahri was hospitalized a couple years ago for allegedly talking about harming someone.

It raises the question that has been asked after other recent mass shootings: Do lawmakers need need to focus more on mental illness when it comes to stopping gun violence? Will more stringent background checks help?

Police: 5 dead in Santa Monica shooting rampage

Police say a gunman killed 4 people in a shooting rampage in Santa Monica, California. The gunman died after a shootout with officers.

Police spokesman Sgt. Richard Lewis gave an update on the investigation.

Witness: Bus shooter had a 'big rifle' and started shooting

Marta Fagerstroem, witnessed the shooting on the Santa Monica bus. She tells Erin Burnett that the shooter had a large rifle and began shooting from the front to the back of the bus.
